How To Play Texas Holdem Poker

The world is playing poker these days and many have begun to wonder just how to play Texas holdem poker.

This extremely popular brand of poker is everywhere, the game of choice for all poker enthusiasts, a high stakes game of chance and skill that brings out the best in the world’s best.

For those just getting involved in the poker craze, learning how to play Texas holdem poker is the first step.

Texas holdem is an incredibly simple game when you look at it on paper.

It’s the best game for beginner’s and because of that appearance of simplicity is the most popular form of poker around. Each player is dealt two cards to start. The top card is discarded by the dealer after the first round of betting - the bum card - and lays down three community cards, known as the flop.

After another round of betting, the dealer once again lays down the bum card and then lays down the turn card. One more round of betting and one last card is laid down, the river.

The five community cards are to be used with the two cards dealt to each player to form a five card poker hand, following the basic rules of poker hands. Many games of Texas holdem are played with no betting limits, and for that reason the four separate rounds of betting can become tense showdowns between great hands and cold-faced bluffs.

When learning how to play Texas holdem poker though, the most important thing to remember is that the game is not entirely about the cards. There are many aspects of Texas holdem that can make you a great player when mastered.

Foremost, you will want to have a decent grasp of what your hand means. Those first two cards are integral to knowing how you will play. Most hands are considered bad, especially when playing with up to seven other players. You will want to take heed of the basic percentages and chance that your hand will turn into something good when the flop is laid out. If your hand consists of a 2 and a 7, playing it is assuredly a bluff, one that must be followed with heavy betting and the chance that no one has a decent hand.

Alternately, the presence of so many communal cards makes the game one of the most psychological poker variants around. If, for example, two aces are laid down in the flop and someone bets heavily, you might assume they have an ace. However, you can never know if they are merely bluffing, trying to force you to fold in fear of what they might have.

The basics of how to play Texas holdem poker are very simple. The rules can be explained and mastered in a matter of minutes. However, the art of playing poker, of knowing your cards and knowing your opponent is one that might take years to master. Texas holdem is by far one of the most popular games around, mainly because of that mastery of simplicity.
