Online Texas Holdem Poker:
A Challenge for Table Players

Online texas holdem poker may be a little more of a challeng for players used to sitting around the table.

While the rules of the game are the same, online Texas Holdem offers advantages and disadvantages over the live version, and may take some getting used to for players who have physically played the game at a table.

First of all, the technology that gives us online Texas Holdem doesn’t yet provide an opportunity for the players to pick up physical tells from their opponents - those little, unconsciously done movements or facial expressions that might give someone a hint regarding the strength of a player’s hand.

Perhaps in the future, with the use of web cameras, images of each players face will be displayed around the graphic of the online poker table- which would help make the online version more “real”, and maybe allow the players an opportunity to pick up on some of those “physical tells”.

On the advantageous end of things, online poker offers the ability to use a variety of “odd calculation software” programs during play. Poker calculators are designed to tell you what the odds are for each hand, determine the number of outs you have, and recommend whether you play or fold each hand based on all of the statistics.

The calculators take into consideration how much money you’ve already invested on the hand as well as the strength of your cards. Many of the programs are available for free, which means most of the players you play against online are probably using them!

Depending on where you play poker online and which poker calculator you use, you might be able to set up the calculator to run automatically, reading each card as it’s dealt and informing you of the odds rather than making it an extra step for a player to type in each card that was dealt in order to determine the odds.

Online Texas Holdem Poker is a great way to strengthen your skills and strategies for when you play at the tables at your favorite casino or home game. If you use odd calculation software, you’ll start learning how to calculate the odds of each hand on your own which you will be able to take with you to the physical tables - thereby strengthening your ability and increasing your probability of winning!
